A virtual collaboration from 2007.
Under the name ‘Calendar Girl’, Tamara Barnett-Herrin uploaded an a capella vocal each month from October 2006 to September 2007 for a remix competition. I wasn’t interested in their remix potential so much as in them as songs in their own right, with their quirky, poetic imagery. So, armed with just an electric piano, synthesizer and drum machine, I sat down to incorporate them into more conventional musical narratives than dance floor remixes. As much as possible, I listened and just ‘accompanied’ as though she were in the room with me, trying to create a subtle musical foil for her performances.
Although I worked on some of the other months, these were the three that worked best, and seemed to fit together as a mini song-cycle.
Musically and sonically there are some obvious connections with my Sungrazers project that was active in the same period, but these have their own distinct character.
