Dissident Sound Lab's first EP established the ideological and musical landscape: uncompromising socio-political statements, combined with a fusion of musical elements from breakbeat and 90s dance culture, punk-ish guitars, funky basslines, mixed up with found sounds and audio collage.
The title track opens with the strains of Gershwin's 'Someone to Watch Over Me' arranged for a synthetic brass ensemble specially for the purpose. It re-appears as the closing track of the collection. The lyrics were originally a poem and not intended to be set to music of any sort – but they fit the tempo.
'My Favorite Things' was a bit of a throwaway idea: covering it is something of a rite of passage for jazz musicians. I was more interested in doing something a bit subversive with it, although it does end conventionally enough. Perhaps that sums me up. There are actually a few other references to The Sound of Music hidden in other Dissident Sound Lab tracks...
