Dissident Sound Lab's first EP established the ideological and musical landscape: uncompromising socio-political statements, combined with a fusion of musical elements from breakbeat and 90s dance culture, punk-ish guitars, funky basslines, mixed up with found sounds and audio collage.
The title track opens with the strains of Gershwin's 'Someone to Watch Over Me' arranged for brass ensemble specially for the purpose (NOT a sample as most people probably assume!). It re-appears as the closing track of the collection. Likewise the cheesy TV theme jazz wasn't sourced but composed and played. The lyrics were originally a poem and not intended to be set to music of any sort – but they fit the tempo.
'My Favorite Things' was a bit of a joke: covering it is something of a rite of passage for jazz musicians. I was more interested in doing something a bit subversive with it, although it does end conventionally enough. Perhaps that sums me up. Interestingly there are actually a few other Sound of Music references hidden a number of other Dissident Sound Lab tracks...!
